West Ham vs Arsenal Match Preview
David Moyes gained his first win as West Ham manager at the weekend, surprising a few people as they beat Chelsea. Arsenal needed a late equaliser to earn a point against Southampton, a result that keeps them in fifth place. Both teams need a win for differing reasons, and our Analyst previews the game.
A 1-0 win against Chelsea last time out will have provided David Moyes with some much needed respite, a win that moved them closer to the teams above them. They were slightly fortunate to get the win in a game, scoring early from a low-quality shot and then sitting back, limiting Chelsea to very few high-quality chances.
They rode their luck at times in that game, but have shown improvements since David Moyes has taken charge – mainly in defence. In attack, they have struggled to generate chances in matches, creating just 3 xG in their last four matches, something they definitely need to improve on.
Arsenal were fortunate to come away from St Mary’s with a point after a very below-par performance by their standards. They generated just 0.7 xG in that game, a stark contrast to the 4.9 xG they managed against Manchester United a week earlier with more-or-less the same eleven.
The Gunners also have things to improve on, but their process this season has been the fourth best in the division (xF 34.8 xG, xA 19.1 xG ), and if they continue this process in this game, they shouldn’t have too much trouble against a very defence minded West Ham side.
Selection – Over 2.5 goals @ 7/10
Arsenal have created a lot of chances so far this season, and are averaging 2.2 xG per game. This is expected to occur once again, with plenty of goals the result.
Selection – Arsenal @ 13/20
At a decent price, the Gunners look good value to get the win against a West Ham team that carries little-to-no threat in attack.
