Premier League GW17 Review
Manchester City broke the record for the number of consecutive Premier League wins by beating Swansea in midweek, while Manchester United, Chelsea and Tottenham also won. Our Analyst reviews all of the matches, assessing performances and not just results.
Burnley maintained their excellent start to the season, beating Stoke 1-0 to keep them in the top six. They were slightly fortunate to get the win once again though, scoring from a low-quality chance. They continue to create very few chances in matches, and Stoke can count themselves unlucky to come away empty handed in this match.
Liverpool were held at home yet again, this time failing to break down West Brom. It was the same story for Jurgen Klopp’s men, as they created a host of chances but failed to take them, generating 2.4 xG. West Brom gained a much needed point to keep them out of the relegation zone.
A fourth win in succession means Leicester continue to climb the table under Claude Puel, beating Southampton 4-1 at St Mary’s. They were slightly fortunate to hit the net four times in that game, but deservedly gained another three points. Saints are now without a win in four matches.
West Ham made it back-to-back clean sheets thanks to a goalless draw with Arsenal, another good defensive display from David Moyes’ team, as they conceded no high-quality chances once again. Manchester United beat Bournemouth 1-0 in what was a very tight encounter, with both sides generating a similar amount of expected goals.
Crystal Palace left it late to beat Watford, scoring two goals in the last 5 minutes to secure a 2-1 win and a much needed three points. They just about edged proceedings, and are now unbeaten in six matches. Everton are in-form also, and they registered their third win in four matches by beating Newcastle 1-0 – mainly thanks to another impressive defensive display.
Tottenham, Chelsea and Manchester City all registered deserved wins over Brighton, Huddersfield and Swansea respectively. All three teams generated a lot of good chances, and showcased a lot of impressive and exciting attacking play.
Team to Back GW18 – Everton
Everton are heading in the right direction under Sam Allardyce, and have been extremely impressive in defence. They face bottom side Swansea on Monday night, and look good value at 8/11 to get the win.
