Manchester City vs Tottenham Match Preview
Can anyone stop City? They have won their last 15 Premier League games – a new record – and are looking unbeatable at the moment. They face Tottenham on Saturday, who are the second best team in the league according to Infogol’s xG table – but can they take anything from the Etihad? Our Analyst previews the game.
Having comfortably beaten their rivals Manchester United last weekend, Manchester City continued their winning habit by thrashing Swansea in midweek 4-0. It was another masterclass in which David Silva was the star of the show, and helped generate over 3 xG – the 8th time they’ve achieved that number this season.
According to Infogol’s expected table, Manchester City have the best attack (44.8 xG) and best defence (13.2 xG) in the league this season – showing just how superior they have been. They have beaten all of the other ‘big six’ teams quite convincingly, by an aggregate score of 11-2 (8.4 – 3.6 xG), with a valid question being, can anyone stop them?
Tottenham are the last of the ‘big-six’ teams to face City in the first half of the season, and Infogol believes this will be their toughest test of the season to date.
Spurs have been inconsistent with their results this season, but their performances and process has remained very good. In fact, based on chances created and conceded this season, Tottenham are expected to be second in the table (according to Infogol expected table).
Pochettino’s team have performed in line with expected, but teams above them (Manchester United and Chelsea) have over-performed so far, leaving them in fourth. They have the second best expected goal difference (xGD) behind City, and the second best defence (14.1 xG).
All this points to a tight contest between the two best teams in the league so far this season. An intriguing game is in store, and the eyes of the world will be tuning in to see if Spurs can put a stop to the Manchester City juggernaut.
Selection – Manchester City win @ 11/20
Though Tottenham will be the best team City have faced this season, the league leaders are expected to have too much for Spurs, and could win comfortably such as the gap between City and the rest.
Selection – Over 2.5 goals
Both teams have a plethora of attacking talent, and both generate a lot of chances in matches. Despite this game featuring the league’s best two defences, goals are expected at the Etihad.
