Chelsea vs Arsenal - Match Preview

The big match of the weekend is undoubtedly the clash between Champions Chelsea and their London rivals Arsenal that takes place at Stamford Bridge on Sunday afternoon. Infogol’s Analyst will aim to use unique stats and data points to select the best bets for the match.

Chelsea have bounced back well from their shock home defeat to Burnley on the opening day of the season, winning their next four games in all competitions. Their latest victory came in the Champions League with a 6-0 success against Qarabag.

Successful return to the Champions League for Chelsea

Their three league wins have come against Tottenham, Everton and Leicester, and while they have played well in those games, they haven’t been generating a lot of scoring opportunities in matches. They are averaging 1.15 xG per match in the league so far this season, a decrease on last year’s stat, but it is early in the season and this should improve with the return of key players.

Alvaro Morata is Antonio Conte’s big signing of the summer, and he has hit the ground running, scoring three goals in four league games – all of which have been headers. He is a crucial piece to the jigsaw, and the one player that links everything together for Chelsea. If Chelsea are to win, he will have to play well, and if he does, he will get on the scoresheet.

Arsenal’s start to the season has been a turbulent one, winning against Leicester before defeats to Stoke and Liverpool, with a victory in their latest outing against Bournemouth. It was a much improve performance in that game, albeit against an opposition that hasn’t started the season well.

Arsenal bounced back from heavy defeat

They followed that victory up with another win, although not as convincing, against Koln in the Europa League in midweek. Alexis Sanchez came back into the team and scored a stunner, but Arsenal still looked vulnerable in defence – which has been a problem for a number of years now.

Arsene Wenger’s team have an expected goal against (xGA) average of 1.6 xG so far this season, emphasising their vulnerable defence as they concede a lot of chances in matches. They will have a tough task containing this Chelsea team, especially if they are full strength.

Arsenal played late on Thursday meaning that Chelsea have had an extra two days to prepare for this game, which could give them a greater edge. The Champions are expected to be too strong for this Arsenal team, in a game where there should be plenty of goals. Morata should be too much for the Arsenal defence to handle, so expect him to get on the scoresheet.
