Manchester United vs Tottenham Match Preview

The biggest game of the weekend takes place at Old Trafford, as Manchester United host Tottenham Hotspur. With Manchester City setting such a hot pace at the top, this game carries even more weight as the two teams look to stay on their coattails. Our Analyst previews the game, using underlying expected goals (xG) stats to produce the best bet.

Manchester United

Jose Mourinho’s side come into this huge game on the back of an unexpected and very disappointing defeat at the hands of newly-promoted Huddersfield. They were beaten 2-1 in a game where they created very few chances for the second league game running, generating a total of just 1.2 xG in those two poor performances.

They have been unfortunate with their schedule of late though, having played all of their last four matches away, so will be looking forward to being back at Old Trafford. Their home form has been impressive so far this season, winning all six of their matches in all competitions – scoring 21 in the process.

United’s home form has been impressive

Mourinho will be under-pressure to play in a much more offensive fashion after the more defensive displays against Liverpool and Huddersfield, so United are expected to take the game to Spurs, which could leave them vulnerable at the back.

Tottenham

Tottenham have had a mixed seven days, drawing with Real Madrid at the Bernabeu before thumping Liverpool at Wembley, but then capping it off with a defeat in the Carabao Cup to West Ham in midweek.

However, Spurs did rest plenty of players in midweek, in what was their first defeat in 10 matches. Mauricio Pochettino’s team have been performing well so far this season, generating a host of chances, and they tore Liverpool apart last weekend in one of their best performances of the season to date (2.46 – 0.76 xG).

Spurs in good shape

Their form on the road has been the most impressive factor this season, having won all four of their league matches away from Wembley. They carry a good attacking threat, especially on the counter-attack, but a lot of that comes through Harry Kane, who is not going to be fit for this game, so Spurs will have to adapt.

Conclusion

Both these teams come into this game having created plenty of chances so far this season, and both teams have excellent attacking options. The loss of Harry Kane through injury will be a big one for Tottenham, and will aid Manchester United’s chances, but both teams are still expected to get on the scoresheet.
