La Liga GW21 Review

Barcelona won again, while both Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid found their form in what was another compelling weekend of La Liga action. Our Analyst reviews the main talking points, assessing performances and not just results.

Actual vs Expected Goal totals for La Liga GW21

Leganes were fortunate in more than one way in their 3-2 win, as Espanyol’s Mario Hermoso scored a hat-trick – one in the right net but two in the wrong one! In total, Leganes generated the worst of the chances, just 1.2 xG compared to 2.03 xG, and Espanyol will feel hard done by - both teams remain in mid-table.

Sevilla conceded a very late equaliser in their match against Getafe and will regret missed opportunities, as they created enough chances (1.9 xG) in what was a tough game against a dogged Getafe team. That result leaves Vincenzo Montella’s team five points off the top four, but the signs are good for the new man in charge who has already steered his team into the Copa del Rey semi-finals.

A dominant Barcelona left it late to beat Alaves 2-1, with Lionel Messi’s sublime free-kick proving decisive and extending their winning streak to seven matches.

Meanwhile, Real Madrid gained a much needed victory against Valencia, a side above them in the table, and in some style too, with a stylish 4-1 victory at the Mestalla. It was another disappointing defeat for third-placed Valencia, though, as they continue to slip closer to the chasing pack and further from Barcelona.
