Southampton vs Tottenham Hotspur Match Preview
Southampton host Spurs in what is the only Premier League match taking place on Sunday.
It’s probably safe to say that Abdoulaye Doucoure will not receive the friendliest of receptions when his Watford side travel to Southampton in the FA Cup later this month - his handball gaining his side a late point against the Saints in last weekend’s 2-2 draw at Vicarage Road.
For all of the outrage over the controversial equaliser, though, the goal was the least that Watford deserved, having created the better chances (1.77 xG compared to Southampton’s 0.94).
Carving out clear opportunities has been a problem for 17th-placed Southampton. They’ve managed to record an xG of more than 1 just once in their last six matches, and confidence is likely to be low considering Mauricio Pellegrino’s side come into this game without a Premier League win since late-November.
Fifth-placed Spurs on the other hand are unbeaten in five Premier League matches since a 4-1 defeat at Manchester City in December. During those five games they have notched up a total xG of 13.67, over 2.7 xG per match, and this has been reflected in the actual score-lines, with wins including a 3-0 triumph over Burnley and last weekend’s 4-0 rout of Everton at Wembley.
They also ran out 5-2 winners against Southampton during the same period, with goals from Dele Alli and Heung-Min Son complimenting yet another Harry Kane hat-trick.
All three of those players have good recent scoring records against the Saints, too, and the home defence will have their work cut out once again.
Kane is now two goals clear of Mohamed Salah in the leading goal scorers’ table, and like Salah’s Liverpool side, is part of a three-pronged attack which very rarely fails to fire - expect more goals.
